Rollators have several real disadvantages: because all four legs roll continuously, they offer less stability than a fixed-leg walker, require the user to actively control forward movement, and the wheeled frame adds weight compared to a standard walker.

The core trade-off with a rollator walker is that the wheels that make it convenient also make it less forgiving. A user must engage the hand brakes deliberately before sitting on the seat — the rollator will roll forward if the brakes aren't locked. On slopes, uneven pavement, or thick carpet, that rolling resistance becomes a safety variable a fixed walker doesn't introduce. Rollators are also wider than standard walkers, which creates real doorway clearance problems in older homes.
